In 2008, Hiram Garbuncle, a veteran criminal defense attorney, witnesses the unprovoked, brutal beating of Alec Monceau, a black man whose car carries an Obama bumper sticker. The attorney is a miserly, racist alcoholic, whose journalist friend pressures him into defending Alec from a false charge.
