A glossy promise. A murdered promoter. And a road someone is willing to kill for.
When tourism consultant Nora Keene arrives in Salmon, Idaho, selling jobs, visitors, and a bright new future, reserve deputy Hatta McFarlane determines Nora’s backers are vague, her promises are slippery, and the stranger at the back of the council meeting scares her badly enough to crack her perfect smile.
By morning, Nora is dead behind the banners for Discover Salmon Weekend, her phone is missing, and the trail leads from false names and doctored maps to land Hatta inherited.
Suspects include Grant Bellamy, an ambitious lodge owner who has plans of his own; Clay Berringer, a disgruntled rancher; Wade Thomas and Bud Ferris Jr., rival contractors competing for promised work; and a stranger with more than one name.
With Sheriff Earl Hobbs, her perceptive dog Sprout and her ghostly grandmother helping, Hatta must discover who is turning memory, money, and murder into a map before the missing murder weapon is used on her.
